Treatment. Operations intended to benefit safety and/or economy by changing the characteristics of the waste. Three basic treatment objectives are: (a) volume reduction, (b) removal of radionuclides from the waste, (c) change of composition. After treatment, the waste may or may not be immobilized to achieve an appropriate waste form.
