The Central Research Institute for Physics (KFKI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was founded with the aim of conducting basic and applied research in nuclear physics. Initial research activities started with particle physics but broadened to include nuclear energy, solid state physics, microelectronics, real-time measurement and computing techniques.

The utilisation of artificial radionuclides began. Radioisotopes were produced at the Research Reactor VVR (5MW). There is no precise data on the isotopes produced, however, about 80% of the radioactive waste had low to intermediate specific activity.
